According to the Anxiety Disorders Association of America, one in every eight children will have an child anxiety disorder.  That’s a pretty terrible statistic, isn’t it?  The sad part is that many of these children go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed because so many parents, teachers and even doctors don’t recognize the symptoms of anxiety.  Instead, these children tend to get labeled as ADHD, autistic, troublemakers or even mentally ill and they don’t get the proper treatment.

Anxiety can be and is often found along with some of the issues above, so that doesn’t make it easy to spot, either.  Let’s take a look at the most common anxiety disorder that can affect children and what the main symptoms to watch for would be.

Generalized anxiety disorder, also known as GAD, is by far the most common anxiety disorder found in children.  Kids with GAD will often appear to be overachievers and perfectionists who are extremely hard on themselves.  They will constantly say that they could do better.  Children with GAD will be anxious over almost everything – will their clothes look all right, will they pass that English test, are their friends mad at them and so on.

Unfortunately, children do not necessarily exhibit their anxiety in ways that make it apparent they are fearful.  Instead, quite often they will be seen as “acting out” – angry outbursts, not doing what they are supposed to such as homework or even things as drastic as stealing from others.  Instead of getting treatment, too many of these kids end up getting in trouble at home, at school and even with the law.
